Summer Projects 2018

Funding has been secured to support an 8-week research project during July-September 2018, for the experimental investigation of metal-organic framework synthesis. Candidates should be currently in the 2nd or 3rd year of an undergraduate degree course and are encouraged to get in touch by email by November 31st 2017, attaching a brief CV.


 

Part II Projects 2018 (Oxford only)

Prospective Part II students are encouraged to get in touch by email to discuss potential research projects, undertaken in collaboration with the Goodwin group. Typical themes may include one or a mixture of the following:

  • Synthesis of functional coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks
  • In-situ studies of metal-organic framework crystallisation
  • Structural characterization by advanced X-ray diffraction
  • Investigation of phase behaviour and formation of solids
  • Piezoelectric, battery and sensing applications

 

Research

Our research covers a variety of aspects of materials, from how they form to their performance in real-world applications. We test model systems to develop a fundamental understanding of materials’ formation and structural behaviour, and try to design materials with new and improved functions for applications like batteries, superconductors and sensors. State of the art experiments in our laboratory are combined with those performed at national facilities and by international collaborations.

Biography

Hamish read Natural Sciences at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, specialising in Chemistry and graduating with 1st class honours in 2008. He then moved across the city to complete his PhD (2012) and a postdoc in Materials Science under the guidance of Anthony Cheetham. From 2014 until 2016 he held an independent research position at the National Institute for Materials Science, Japan, where his research was focused on the fundamental chemistry of crystallization and the applications of new materials in battery and sensor technology. He is currently the holder of a Glasstone Research Fellowship in Inorganic Chemistry and an Extraordinary Junior Research Fellowship at The Queen's College, studying the formation and crystallography of flexible materials under temperature, pressure and electric fields in collaboration with Andrew Goodwin. Outside of the laboratory he enjoys public engagement, cooking, music, eating and getting outdoors. He writes a blog about life as a young scientist here.
